Join us for a casually paced ride to COUNTY LINE ORCHARD in Hobart where we’ll pick some apple, drink some apple cider, down some apple cider doughnuts, and waddle all the way home. The complete route is 70mi, but there is an option to take the train home.
Join this stunningly beautiful ride in Barry County, Michigan. There are 18, 36, and 62 mile options along a gravel rolling hills circuit. It’s a fundraiser for the Barry County Animal Shelter!

For those pressed for time, or still building endurance, there will be a shorter option. Upon reaching the Dunes, the South Shore Line ($8) is easily accessible and runs directly back to Hyde Park.

A Chicago staple since 1954, Mario’s on Taylor Street offers old fashioned Italian lemonade, and little else. The line stretches around the block most summer evenings, but the wait is part of the experience.

The truth of the matter is that, at least for coffee nerds, HERO doesn’t really rate in the scheme of local spots. But it is a cute and tiny spot, with outdoor seating, conveniently located downtown. And yes, it’s at the end of an alley off of Jackson.
Stick to the basics: espresso drinks are good, drip is not. Breakfast is decent but spendy. Vegan doughnuts from Beacon available on weekdays.

Bike the Drive is the primary fundraiser for the ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION ALLIANCE. Our city wouldn’t have a fraction of its bicycle infrastructure without this organization, so supporting this event is crucial to the ongoing maintenance & expansion of bike lanes, youth education, etc.

Join us for a ride down to Big Marsh Park for the weekly Short Track race series! This is a great introduction to off-road racing - gravel, cyclocross, MTB - in a controlled and safe environment. There are heats for riders of all abilities, and even if you choose not to race Big Marsh is a hoot to explore.
Bonus: We’ll stop for pizza at Route 66 on the way home!

Carpool (or ride!) west to Willow Springs for the annual Palos Meltdown mountain bike race.
We’ll set up camp next to the race course for proper spectating, provide picnic provisions, and set out for a side adventure to those interested in exploring the forest by bike or by foot! If you do not have an off-road capable bike, loaners are available. Just ask!
If you love animals, know that the Palos forest preserve is home to red foxes, white tailed deer, coyotes, many bird species, racoons, and otters!
